When Should I Schedule My Child’s First Eye Examination?

The American Optometric Association recommends the following for the best eye health for children:

Pediatric Eye Examination Guidelines:
Birth to 24 Months: at 6 months of age
2 to 5 Years: at 3 years of age
6 to 18 Years: Before 1st grade and then every two years thereafter.

During routine medical examinations with your pediatrician or family doctor, your child’s eyes will be examined for any possible issues. If any problems are suspected, you may receive a referral to an eye doctor for further evaluation.

Early identification of vision problems are extremely important because children are often more responsive to treatment when they are younger and problems are diagnosed early.

Experts say that over 80 percent of what a child learns in school is presented visually, so making sure your son or daughter has good vision can make a big difference in their academic performance.

Do I Have To Have My Eyes Dilated?

At TotalEyeCare Centers, generally all new patients under 18 years of age will be dilated during their examination or have the dilation rescheduled at a convenient time. Dilation after the first examination is at the doctors’ discretion based on condition, age, symptoms, and other factors. While it may feel very bright while your eyes are dilated, most patients are able to drive home. If you do not have sunglasses with you, please let us know so we may provide you with a disposable pair.

I Use A Computer All Day. Is That Hurting My Eyes?

Computer vision syndrome is a real problem for many people who spend hours in front of a computer screen each day. Making sure your computer screen is at the correct distance away from you and wearing a pair of glasses specifically for while you’re working on a computer may help. If you are experiencing headaches or feelings of eye fatigue or strain, tell your TotalEyeCare Centers provider.

Are There Vitamins or Supplements I Can Take To Help My Vision?

There are studies that suggest antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids are all beneficial to eye health. In general, it is advised to get most of your nutrients through a healthy diet, and for eye health, this can include healthy fish and a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables. If you are planning on taking supplements, be sure and speak to both your TotalEyeCare Centers doctor and your family doctor, as some supplements can interfere with prescription medications and carry other risks.
